Keeping Goals Top of Mind

Setting goals is something that everyone needs to do.  When it comes to becoming financially independent, goal setting is something that is vital.  You need to plan out your path, you need to understand how you are going to get where you want to go, and you need to lay out the steps along the way.  I’m sure, like us, everyone has put plans down on paper.  We have a goal and we are working toward it.

But how do you stick to it? When you feel like you’re never getting there, what do you do?  There are a variety of ways to remind yourself of these goals.  I know “Your Money or Your Life” talks about printing out some graph paper, sticking it on your fridge and tracking your monthly income and expenses.  Bunches of weight loss apps, and fitness tracking apps use some sort of daily reminders on your phone.  I know Mint and Personal Capital show you reminders every day, and send you emails and tell you about portfolio and expense performance.

But, these notifications are annoying, so what did we decide to do?  We remind ourselves all the time of our goals, not only by talking to each other about it, but we changed all our passwords.  Something that you have to type in multiple times a day, now reminds us every time we log in to our email or other accounts.  It works surprisingly well.  How many passwords do you have that you can just list off the top of your head?  Every time I log into my email, and every time I log into my accounts, I have to type out things that are related to my goals.

It’s also rather handy for all those automated password changes, it’s pretty easy to come up with a sentence that puts your goals into a concrete idea that gets pounded into your head every time you type it.  It’s simple and easy and it really works. Give it a try…

That’s such a great idea! I think people often set goals but then don’t have it visible in their site in any form, so they start to fade away, but we all know how often we use our passwords!
