Adventures in Anony-Blogging

We’ve Been Outed

As you could tell from Mr. Wow’s latest post, we are wandering again.  Because of this, today’s post will be a short, but fun one.  It all happened a few months back.

Tales of Being an Anonymous Blogger

Like many others in this blogosphere, the Mr and I have chosen to remain anonymous.  While we don’t have any one specific reason for maintaining our anonymity, we just haven’t come around to blasting our names or faces on our blog yet.

But that doesn’t mean that we have been hiding in a hole or walking around with bags over our heads either.

At the beginning of the year, we were asked to be guests on a few of our favorite podcasts: Bigger Pockets Money and the FIRE Drill Podcast.

Now, being the podcast junkie that I am, I couldn’t resist the offer.  And let me tell you, it is an unbelievable experience to be an avid listener and then get the opportunity to be a guest on the show. So big thanks to Scott and Mindy, as well as J and Gwen!

“Hey, are you…?”

So a few days after our episode went live, I received an interesting message on Facebook Messenger.

I froze for a second.

I then immediately texted Mr.Wow.  And by immediately, I mean a few minutes later according to the time stamp.

For the sake of keeping my friend’s identify hush-hush, I will refer to him as “Tyrone”.

The Back Story

Tyrone and I had been friends for years and used to hang out all the time.  But then he moved and life got in the way.

We lost touch.

We had only seen each other once in the last couple of years and had barely talked.

Back to The Message

After I got over the initial “Oh shit! What is he going to think?”, I immediately found myself smiling.

Why you ask?

Because being an anonymous blogger is tough.  I can’t talk about blogging with my family; can’t talk about it with my friends.  But it’s such a big part of my life.

I lead a double life.

It’s one reason that I have loved meeting other bloggers and people within the FIRE community at local meet ups, Chautauqua, and FinCon.

Actually at FinCon a bunch of us anony-bloggers confided in the fact that we finally felt like we could talk about our blog life, uncensored.  It was glorious!

Shout out to Tyrone if you are reading this!!

But now I had a friend IRL.  One who shared a similar mindset and now knew about my blog.

What a relief!

Everything Happens For a Reason

Following us being outed, we met up with Tyrone for dinner a few weeks later.  He mentioned that Joel, one of his co-workers (now ex co-worker, more on this in a minute), also wanted to meet us.

We had a wonderful dinner, talking about everything from investing to real estate, lifestyle changes to getting spouses on board… you know, the usual FIRE topics.

We then got to hear about Joel’s fascinating story: how he wakes up at 5am everyday, how he’s bought a bunch of investment properties, and how he had just given his notice.  Not gonna lie, Mr. Wow was way jealous. Not of the early wake up call or real estate part, but the whole quitting his job thing.

Since then, Joel has started an awesome blog where he shares his adventures in fun-employment, real estate, and his 5am email lists.  He’s also become a regular in our ChoseFI local group and a friend.

All because of Tyrone’s mad sleuth skills, my FIRE-minded community grew.   I reconnected with an old friend and gained a new, awesome buddy.

By the way, if you’re looking for a new read from a really interesting and fun guy, be sure to check out Joel’s blog:  5am Joel.  He has inspired me to start waking up earlier and has inspired Mr.Wow to start going commando.  Big thanks for my inspiration Joel, but WTF with the underwear.

For those of you who are anonymous, have you been outed yet?  How did it happen?

  • Joel May 22, 2018 at 2:57 pm

Wow.. Thanks for the shout out and compliments. Where do I transfer your payment to? Maybe I’ll just pay you back in exotic beers from my homeland.

On a serious note, I’m so glad to have met you guys when I did. Quitting is hard, and it really helps having an encouraging group of friends who think alike. Thank you!

PS. Has anyone claimed “CommandoFIRE” yet? It’s when you’ve hit FI and have enough money to buy underwear, but you still choose not to.

You are welcome. You have a fantastic story and figured others in this blogosphere would also find it interesting. I am glad to have met you as well and have loved reading more about your adventures in fun-employment. I’ll let you and Mr.Wow hash it out for the CommandoFIRE url.

PS: Payment in beers will be just fine. Hope to see you at the next meet-up!

  • Accidental FIRE May 22, 2018 at 3:52 pm

Ha, funny story. I’m anonymous as well and a blogger friend recommended that I go on a podcast or two. I got invited on one. But my voice is pretty recognizable – we humans are pretty good at picking those things up. So I thought “knowing my luck I’ll be discovered”. So I haven’t done it.

And it happened to you. I’m anonymous for more serious reasons, the folks at my job would probably not appreciate my commentary about, well, them.

I still might do it one day, but I’d feel more comfortable if the podcast could disguise my voice and make me sound like Batman or something. That’d be cool. But creepy too.

    • Mrs WoW May 27, 2018 at 9:29 am

Would love to hear you on a podcast one day, but definitely understand the reasoning behind not doing it. But how cool would it be if you were known as the Batman of FIRE?

  • Gwen @ Fiery Millennials May 22, 2018 at 5:35 pm

Thanks for the warning about Mr. Wow’s underwear…. or lack thereof ? I hope the mister puts the money he saved on undaroos into new shorts that fit him after all that weight loss. Baggy shorts + birthday suit = no beuno….

Oh geez, I didn’t even think of that. Guess I’ll be making him a bunch of cookies, cakes, and pies today to keep those pants on or just get him belt.

Can’t wait to see you in a few days. It is perfect timing since now I am back from traveling and feeling a bit of the post travel blues. I need some Gwen in my life!

  • The Luxe Strategist May 22, 2018 at 7:22 pm

I’m anonymous, but I’m sooooo bad at it. Like, I go to blogger meetups all the time and there are headless pictures of me all over social media. I’ve done a podcast, too! It’s only a matter of time before I’m outed!

Anyway, I love how your outed story has such a positive ending!

    • Mrs WoW May 27, 2018 at 9:35 am

Yep, we’re them same. Blogger meet ups, podcasts, and emoji covered faces in pictures on the internet is a recipe to be outed. We’re still waiting for the first of our family members to figure it out. My bets are on my brother in law or my mom.

  • Tonya@Budget and the Beach May 22, 2018 at 8:02 pm

I think it’s so much easier to be “out” of the blogging closet than it is being in it. Of course you have to think just a tiny bit more about what you write perhaps, but it’s worth it!

    • Mrs WoW May 27, 2018 at 9:37 am

Maybe one day we will come out of the blogging closet, but we’re not quite ready yet.

  • Revanche @ A Gai Shan Life May 22, 2018 at 9:55 pm

Ooh, glad that went well for you 🙂 I’ve done a podcast or two but was told my voice wasn’t recognizable so it should be fine.

I make it such a point that I blog anonymously to protect my family that I wonder if someone I knew offline would bother asking me to confirm if I’m Offline Me.

While I keep such a huge separation between my work and offline life and friendships and my online life, I’m under no illusions that I do so so effectively that I won’t be outed but it has been ten years with only one incident due to a co-worker snooping on my phone, and I don’t go on wildly popular shows either so I should be good for a while ?

I can’t say that we try super hard to stay anonymous, but we also aren’t going out of our way to publicly post pictures of our faces and names. 10 years and only 1 incident means you are doing a great job. Keep up the great work!

  • Liz May 23, 2018 at 7:15 am

I was fairly anonymous until my Dad mentioned my site in his Christmas letter–OMG! Still pretty anonymous other than those 4th cousins though.

The only thing creepier than going commando is that goat? in the picture!

    • Mrs WoW May 27, 2018 at 9:44 am

Haha, that is fantastic that your dad outed you and in a christmas card nonetheless. Luckily, no family members know about our blog yet, but I have bets on who will figure it out first.

The goat is awesome. The picture was taken in a bathroom at a brewery in Amsterdam. I was washing my hands and just happened to look up and see a bunch of pictures of goats all over the bathroom. It had nothing to do with article, but I couldn’t resist putting it in the post. Glad you like it!

  • freddy smidlap May 23, 2018 at 11:49 am

i had to make up this ridiculous nom de plume “freddy smidlap” and started using it on facebook due to all the true and negative things i would post about my employer (without mentioning the name) and nippleheaded coworkers. most of my real life friends don’t know i have this so i don’t promote it there or go and get like 1000 fake online friends like mrs. me.

Wait, you’re saying this isn’t your real name? 😉 Well you picked a good one, don’t think anyone will figure you out with that.

  • steveark May 23, 2018 at 12:47 pm

I blog anonymously but have also been on quite a few podcasts. However I never used my blog name when guesting on podcasts because I did not want my cover blown. Sure enough after one podcast aired a friend called me and told me they knew it was me. At least my blog is still secret.

    • Mrs WoW May 27, 2018 at 9:49 am

Never considered doing it that way. Oh well, can’t change that now. But honestly, I don’t mind that my friend figured it out and actually it is fun now that he knows. I wonder who will be next?

  • Mr. Tako May 28, 2018 at 11:06 am

Outed! Well at least your real name wasn’t up on Yahoo Finance!

I’ve been lucky in that nobody has figured me out yet. I hope it stays that way too, I don’t want my friends and family asking for money all the time.

Seriously, that is a big pro to remaining anonymous. I’m actually curious how often that happens to people who post their numbers and are not anonymous. Have you heard any juicy stories?

  • Mrs. Groovy May 30, 2018 at 4:34 am

We’re anonymous too, for no particular reason. Early on we were interviewed for a segment of the Dave Ramsey show, using just our first names, and a fellow blogger sent us a Tyrone-ish message. Except she wasn’t even questioning. She was like “c’mone now I’d know you two anywhere!”

    • Mrs WoW May 30, 2018 at 6:02 am

Haha, you can’t hide it! I reckon that it might be easier to decipher when given first names, especially being a couple. I bet Tyrone would have caught on even quicker if we had done that.

BTW, hi Mrs.G! Hope everything is going well on the house building front. You guys have been more quiet on the blogosphere than normal so you must be up to some good stuff over there.
