This year I’m stepping it up. Pushing myself to the next level. Moving on up in the world. Rising to the challenge… I think you get the picture.

The December Minimalist Challenge

In December, Mrs.1500 and I completed the Minimalism Challenge in which we purged over 496 items in total from our house. It was awesome! Technically, the challenge is to get rid of 496 items, but I say over 496 because I got rid of a bunch of things that I didn’t even count in the challenge. And for some things, I got rid of multiples of the same object and only counted it for 1.

Exhibit A: some clutter that I decluttered

We even inspired some other peeps to join us in the decluttering madness during December and a few have started the challenge this month. I love seeing the random spattering of clutter that people are parting with.

And by the way, this was inspired by Mrs.1500’s interview with Anthony Ongaro from Break The Twitch and not the latest craze with tidying up. We are so ahead of the times :o).

By having Mrs.1500 as an accountabilibuddy, I made sure to hit my goal number of purge items for the day. And let me tell you, it was one hundred percent freeing. I can already tell a difference in the amount of stuff we have in our house.

I have come to love opening up a cupboard and finding blank, unused space in it, where in the past it would have been stuffed to the brim. Oh the simple pleasures in life ;o).

Its funny because even though I have gotten rid of so much stuff, I know that there is still much, much more to deal with.

New Year, New Challenge

Then sometime in December, Miss Mazuma stopped by for dinner and mentioned something about a step challenge her and Mrs.1500 had been scheming up. Being that I had had so much fun with the last challenge, this one quickly piqued my interest too.

The mission: 10,000 steps a day, totaling 70,000 steps a week.

I thought, “I can step it up (pun totally intended) for a month, this will be a little challenging, but I can do it.”

Full disclosure: when first hearing about this challenge I thought it was for the month of January. I thought for sure I could do this for a month, easy.

Only after signing my name on the line and formally pinky promising to partake in the challenge did I learn the truth. This challenge was not just for a month; it was a challenge that spans the entire year.

My jaw dropped. What had I just done? What was I getting myself into?

This was definitely going to be a challenge for me, especially since I tend to spend a lot of time sitting in front of a computer for work.

Being that I had already signed up, there was no backing out now. And luckily we have a group of about 15 other blog-steppers who help keep me accountable. Their support and encouragement has already helped push me to hit my goal everyday.

Progress So Far

So here I am. 3 weeks into this challenge and let me just say that it has been the best thing for me this year and for a long time.

For years, I used to be a workout-a-holic, hitting the gym almost everyday, playing soccer, softball, kickball, riding horses, and running. I was always out and about doing something active. Then worked picked up and I found my active time decreasing and decreasing. While I still made time to workout a few times a week and go for the occasional run, my activity level had dramatically dropped off. To be honest, the past few years I had gotten lazy.

But 2019 has been a different story already.

Here are my numbers:

  • Total steps: 294,306 (holy moly that’s a lot of steps)
  • Total workouts: 41
  • Total miles run: 26.4 (Dude, I have already run a marathon this month)
  • Active streak: 27 days straight  ( I started a little before January 1st to start preparing for the challenge)

It’s definitely been a challenge. Some days have been easy when I go for a run in the morning and then a short walk later in the day, but others have been really hard.

Last week, it rained here ALL WEEK. Weird for us California peeps to get so much rain and it definitely made getting my steps in more challenging. I spent many hours walking laps around my small house just to get them in.

Yesterday, I had a big day of being chained to my computer and had about 3,000 steps by 7:00pm. I considered just calling it a wash and moving to the couch to watch The Bachelor, but my accountibilibuddies worked their magic and got me out of the house for a 3.5 mile walk. I ended the day with 13,703 steps, which is not bad since 10,000 of those happened between 7:00pm and 10:00pm.

And to be honest, I feel so much better too. Being more active has helped with my eating habits, my sleeping habits, and has drastically improved my mindset since I am actually taking time to take care of myself.

We’re not even a full month in and while it has been a challenge; it has also been amazing. I’ve seen so much more of the town that I live in, I have been on a few hikes that I haven’t done before, and I have spent more time with my mom since she is an avid walker.

All in all, it has been going great and I have been loving being a part of this step challenge.

My accountibilibuddies are awesome and shoot over a message right when I need it most.

My biggest fear at the moment is how I am going to get through my travel days, especially with a flight to India coming up. Going to have to be smart and rack up some steps prior to leaving and upon my return. Not worried for when I am there since we will be walking a lot, but sitting on a plane for over 20 hours will be hard to keep up the pace. You’ll probably catch me walking laps at the airport before my flights. But I’ll get it done.

    Hey there, accountabilibuddy! You’re doing amazing! I’m struggling to get over 10k steps per day, and my main strategy has been to build a buffer early in the week when I have more energy so that I can slack a little bit on days when I’m not up to the task. My goal is to miss zero weeks, but our rainy season in the summer is going to make it very difficult. Can’t wait to get part of the group together in DC in September! 😁

      I like that strategy! The rain has been killer for me, lots of walking circles around the house. But I’d do anything for a step. And yes, there will be definitely a lot of walking come September # StepCon19

    Wait! This step challenge is for a whole year?! Gah!!! 😬
    Just Kidding. Yeah, it’s been great on my end too! I didn’t think it would have as much of an impact but holy cow! Like you, it’s gotten me moving and last week I hiked almost 16 miles, running 2 of those, this week I’ve only hiked 6 miles but that’s 6 more than I normally would’ve hiked.
    Having accountabilibuddies has been awesome and I’m glad I joined. Now for 11 more months of staying active.

      I know right? A month is hard enough. Oh well, we are both locked in now. Glad you joined the group and glad that it is motivating you to get moving. Time for a run!

    100 times up those bleacher steps!? Above and beyond, Mrs. WoW. I thought about joining the step challenge, but I get a lot of my exercise on a bike (Spin Class 3X/week and mountain biking) and thought it would screw up my focus. Or, it’s just a convenient excuse….

      Yeah biking won’t really do much for this challenge. When plotting how to cheat, some of group thought to put their step counters on their kids or dogs. My thought was to give it to Mr. Wow, but he like you mainly rides his bike so that wasn’t gonna work.

      So far, so good. Just finished a 4 mile walk…14,516 so far today :o)
