Whose idea was this Half Marathon Anyway?

At some point in the end of last year, I mentioned to Mr 1500 that we should do a half-marathon as round 2 of our fitness challenge.  It seemed like a great idea.  I was kind of shocked that he actually agreed to it.

So, while I have actually been running and training for this thing, I haven’t actually been keeping you, our dear adoring public up to date with the progress of what has been going down.  Now this changes!!!!

I’ve seen a lot of posts about updates to running from Mr. 1500.  His training seems to be going well.  You can see all the updates that he has posted here, here, here, here and here.  And my personal favorite about farting… you know… speeding in Swedish.  Good Lord, just copying all those links made me realize how lazy I’ve been with my updates.

So How is it going?

All in all it’s been going well.  The Mrs and I have been training together since the turn of the year.  We typically go on runs together 3 times or so a week.  We were both ramping up the mileage and making good strides to getting in shape for the race. Let’s discuss some of the highlights from the training thus far:

  • In the middle of January, we were out of the country for two and a half weeks.  We were actually in South East Asia working on a medical mission.  And I’ll tell you what’s not good for Half-Marathon training..  90 degree weather with 85% humidity, and a jungle.  Yeah, that didn’t work.
  • On the way back, we stopped through CO and visited the 1500’s.  They were kind enough to have a BBQ with some local friends while we were in town.  But this also meant that Mr 1500 and I went for a run.  I’ll have to admit, running at altitude and in the cold after two and a half weeks of not running, and sweating profusely trying to sleep was an interesting experience.  But, I made it and we did a training run together.  I think it was 3 miles, but it was 3 miles more than I did prior to that!!
  • I’ve been slowly ramping up my mileage and maintaining a weight lifting regiment as well.  This, in addition to standard bike commute.  As such, I’ve been doing alright as far as the cardio goes.  But, I ended up throwing out my back two weeks ago.  I’m getting old.  I could hardly get out of bed, and I was in so much pain I could hardly sleep.  Every time I rolled over I’d get a shooting pain down my neck.  It was AWESOME!  Running was put on hiatus while I waiting to be able to get out of bed in the morning.
  • Mrs. Wow’s company has been taking off, and she has a lot of things on her plate.  Like the reasonable, mature human that she is, she decided that it would be in her best interest to run the 10k, not the half.  She just seems to think that there might be better things to do with her hours than pound pavement.  She’s got a point, but we did have our little spats along the side of the road:

    Her – You should keep going I’m holding you up.
    Me – No, I like running with you.
    Her – Well, then why do you always run 20 feet in front of me?
    Me – Uhhhh… point taken.

  • Two weeks ago, I went on an 8 mile run.  I was a little concerned because I hadn’t run that far, but everything went off without a hitch.  I was flying, felt great.  Any of you runners know this feeling, the runner’s “High”.  After I got home, I looked down and my toes were hanging out the side of my running shoes.  For those of you that aren’t runners, you’re supposed to change your shoes every 500 or so miles, because they wear out.  I’ve had these for the better part of 6 years, no bueno.  And now I’m stuck trying to break in new shoes 3 weeks from the race.  Lovely!!!

So, yeah… it’s going FANTASTIC!!!

In all seriousness, I’m excited to run this thing.  It’s going to be fun.  Well, fun isn’t really the right word, but it will be a good experience.

It also sounds like there are going to be several people that we are going to meet up with while in Portland.  So, if you’re in town, make sure to hit us up.

Not only is it going to be great to run with Mr 1500 & JD, there are few folks from the Waffle community that are going to be running with us!!  That’s going to be awesome!

Also, we’re looking at getting plenty of good beers while there, because lord knows we love our beer!!

In the words of the Olympics: Citius, Altius, Fortius  We’re rapidly approaching one of our goals for 2018.  I hope you are as well!!!

    I don’t have any doubt you’ll be fine…this isn’t your first rodeo. ha my guy friend who I used to run with did the same thing and I said the same thing that Mrs. said. He would say, “it’s good for you” and my thought was “f$ck you!” lol

      I’m sure I will live. I’m not quite concerned about that. But, I am concerned about walking around the rest of the day. And I don’t really care to hear all about Mr 1500 & JD and the other folks joining us for the rest of the day. I just have this image in my head of all of them drinking beers, while I come running in all haggard like 3 hours later.

    Don’t worry about the shoes. One week would be enough time to break in shoes, three weeks is more than enough. And good luck!

      I’ve had them for two weeks now, And been running in them full time. Only got a few little blisters at first, but I think I’m good.

      Oh, A full marathon? That’s a whole different animal. This I can do, it sucks and there’s training involved, but I can do it. While the full marathon training, after we ran more than my entire commute, or ran 6 miles… to the start of a half marathon. Talk about crazy!

    I thought the same thing about 9 miles into my half earlier this month, “why do I keep signing up for these things?” Oh yeah, so I don’t let my “food baby” get too big… You’ll do fine, just keep on training. 🙂

    Me too! One year ago, I couldn’t even run a mile. Now, I may be in the best shape of my life. That’s not saying a ton because it’s all relative, but I’m really happy with where I’m at right now. Thanks for the challenge!

    I’m really looking forward to Portland. I probably won’t run it in 2 hours like I hoped, but I think that I’ll be able to run the entire thing. Also, Peeps! And beer. Mmmmmmm, beer…

    So, I’m seeing you at the end of March. Then, I’ll see you again a little over 3 months later in July. What is the next challenge?

      I have this weird feeling this isn’t going to be the last of your half marathoning. It seems to be going reasonably well for you.

      You never ever know. These things tend to happen without you ever noticing. You could wake up Saturday and feel great. Peeps probably aren’t going to help that all that much, but the dangling smell of beer certainly will!

      This is true, we have a week, what’s next? You know this is a very slippery slope? Ever heard of an IronMan??

        I’ll continue running, but I’m not sure about another half-marathon. Those long runs take a whole lot out of you…

          Running is one of those things that you kind of have to grow to enjoy. It will grow on you. There’s not a better way to explore a new town. It’s cheap, it’s easy to do where ever you are. But it’s also easier to maintain than to build up to a level like anything else.

          IronMan??? If you don’t want to do another half… I don’t know if an IronMan is in the cards. I don’t know that I want to do that either.

    Somehow, these challenges always seem like such a great idea, and then regret inevitably sets it. I’m thinking of a long and arduous bike race I got roped into by my friends right now. In the end, it was a fun experience and we have war stories to reminisce now. You know – bonding opportunities!

    And, nothing like peer-pressure to get you into the best shape of your life, as Mr. 1500 said above! Just think of how svelte you’ll be as you enjoy beers afterward!

      It’s true, these things certainly sound great at the time, then 2 months later, the pangs of regret inevitably set in and you have to push through. It’s a great metaphor for all this finance stuff.

      The strongest bonds you make certainly are ones that are forged in strife and discomfort. You all made it through together. There’s something to be said about that!

      Oh the beers will be so tasty. And I do think both the Mrs & I tend to stare at each other a little longer these days 😉

      Quite frankly, I’m excited to see how it goes as well. Because it’s gonna go one of two ways, great or awful. And either way, it will make for a great story.

    I’ve never experienced the mythical runner’s high… probably because my max run of under 3mi so far is just when you guys start to relax and loosen up… Likewise, I’ve never felt like my sneakers need breaking in…
    I hope you do get everything situated before next week… you pinky toe needs a safe home!

    It looks like you’ve been putting some hard work in for this race! I had my ups and downs during my training, but am almost done. I’m finishing up my training with a 12mi run on Saturday then maintenance runs next week. We are almost there! Let’s do this!

      Yup, we’re almost done. I plan on doing a 8-10 miler this weekend, and the Mrs is going to do a 5-6 miler. Then we keep our legs loose because there’s not much else that you can do only a week out.

      Let’s get it done. I hope you have your running shoes ready and your drinking shoes on!!!

      I’m sure it will go just fine. And it’s fun to have her stuff taking off, it’s a lot of work, but it’s a lot of fun.
