I’m weird, You should be too

Weirdo. Freak. Misfit. Oddity.

All these words have been used to describe me at some point in my life. I don’t know that it’s something to be proud of, and I certainly know that when I was younger it wasn’t something that made puberty any easier. I was always the kid with the big ears that sat in the back of the room. I had braces for a long, long time, and eventually just said F it and took them off because I got sick of having them.  I figured my teeth are straight enough.

In high school I was a weird one. I was on the both the football and lacrosse team and was also in all AP classes.  Additionally, I also found myself auditioning for the high school play. In fact, in our middle school rendition of A Mid Summer Night’s Dream,  I was actually Oberon. Yes, that’s Oberon, King of the Fairies!!

Ill met by moon light proud Titania!!!

But I digress.  I opened my kimono a little bit to let you know that I’m weird, I’ve always been a little odd.  I can’t decide if I kept it hidden from the Mrs., or if that’s why she liked me.  [There is nothing hidden about him being weird, I’ve known this from day 1~ Mrs.Wow].

Enough reminiscing about being a teenager, I’m weird still now!  Here’s a few examples:

  1. I’m right handed.  But that’s not weird.  It actually makes me one of the vast majority.  But, if you ever want to see someone flip their shit, watch my wife try to use my computer.  Why?  I use my mouse with my left hand.  [And not only is his mouse on the left side, his mouse buttons are backwards too.  It is the most cockamamie thing I have ever seen~ Mrs.Wow]. I also brush my teeth with my left hand.  I try to do all sorts of weird menial things with my left hand.  I tend to think it’s from some misguided belief that by making myself do things with my left hand, I’m training my brain to think differently and hence keeping it from atrophying away to nothing.  [Maybe you should work on not getting hit by cars, that would also help in preserving some brain cells!~ Mrs.Wow].  All I know is that you should watch my co-workers and my wife try to use my computer.  It’s hilarious.  Actually, maybe that’s why I do it, spite.

Yup, see my left-handed mouse. It’ll getcha!

  2. I value living my life more than I value buying the next gadget.  My phone is shattered, my car has 180K miles on it, my jeans have holes in them.  Even the phone I have, I won in a raffle (Thanks FinCon and Republic Wireless).
  3.  I also basically wear the same thing almost every day. Now, that’s not that weird in and of itself, but you know what is weird?  The only jeans I wear are Levi’s 513’s, so I bought 4 pairs.  The only sneakers I wear are Nike Air Max Janoski’s.  I found a pair of shoes that I like, so I bought 4 pairs (see the pic up top).  [Mr. Wow forgot to mention that he is color-blind, so he thought he was buying grey shoes, when in fact they were teal.~ Mrs.Wow].  And more often than not, my t-shirt is some sort of either a brewery shirt, or a shirt I picked up from traveling.  If it’s cold, I’ll have a zip up hoodie over the T-shirt.  So, yeah… if you want to find me, that should do it.
  4. I take cold showers and I love it, although  It takes a little getting used to.  If you just go cold turkey (HA!), it’s a good shock to your system.  I’d recommend turning the temperature down little by little.  In fact, it took me about a month to tell anyone at my new office that the hot water wasn’t working.  I feel like it cuts a toughness groove in your brain.  Now, stop imagining me in the shower!!
  5. Credit card debt is something that so many people in this country have and it’s really a shame.  We were talking at work about getting new credit cards for rewards.  Yes, my ears perk up when ever someone talks rewards points, or 401k’s or what not.  But, everyone was talking about how they needed one that they could transfer a balance to.  I even heard someone talk about how they had over $60K in credit card debt!  I audibly scoffed and couldn’t contain myself as I exclaimed, “What are you nuts?!?!” So, apparently not running up massive amounts of consumer debt makes us weird as well.
  6. I sing and dance in the grocery store.  Just today we were in the market, and I pushing the cart while the Mrs. is off grabbing something else from another aisle.  She comes back and there’s me… Bopping around to the music in the grocery store, while I try to find the cheapest per sqft pack of toilet paper.
  7. Riding my bike to work is something I’ve discussed many a time on this site.  But, after almost 9 months at my current employer, I still get questions about biking.  Just last week, someone asked me “If you have a motorcycle and can get to work in 20 minutes, why do you bike and take an hour?”  I just responded, “What fun is that?  I like the exercise”.  Or, when it’s raining, and they ask how I’m gonna get home.  I just reply, “My bike, that’s how I got here.  Besides if humans are anything, they’re waterproof!”  They all just shake their heads and go on about their business.
  8. I pack my lunch almost every day.  People have even commented at my office.  “How do you pack lunch every day?”  I just replied, “I cook every night and just make more than we eat so we have lunch.  Then we can pick what we want every day for lunch.”  We even discussed how we need to order Chinese food again so we can get more tupperware to pack our lunches in.  I think I blew their minds.

See, just open the fridge and find lunch!

  9. We watch Maury Povich and the Bachelor, and love every minute of it.
  10. We listen to crappy rap music.
  11. I’m a grown man that drinks milk every night with dinner. More times than not it’s chocolate milk.

I could go on and on and on.  I think you get the point.  I’m weird.

But being weird is a good thing.  I think, at least to some extent.  There are a lot of benefits to blazing your own path.

You find new ways to get places.  You look at things from new angles.  You see the world through a different lens.

It’s what really allows us to make so much progress down this path to FI.  We’re breaking the mold, we’re questioning the tried and true way of doing things.

Really, we’re all weird when you pull back the covers a little bit.  Embrace it!  What fun would life be if we were all the same?  And always, always remember: Freaks come out at night!

What about you?  Any quirks?

The older I get, the more I appreciate weird people. You’ve got a great list and you truly are a freak. Love it!

People think it’s weird that I don’t wear any underwear. I haven’t since 2003. I just don’t see the point! Ha!

I’m torn on how to respond to this… Thanks? Ha!

Not only is underwear restricting, it’s also expensive. You have freed yourself from the oppressive burden of skivvies!! Way to let that freak flag fly!! This is something I should try intentionally. Ever so often it happens by accident when I forget to pack them.

Try it! For me it started as a 30 day challenge/dare someone gave me. I never went back afterwards. It’s very freeing.

When I was in my corporate job I used to give board room presentations to groups of executives. Stressful, but I’d always calm myself down by thinking “I’m jiggling freely under this 3-piece suit and nobody can even tell the difference”. It was my daily ‘stick it to the man’ while working in a suit & tie.

Everyone has a nice chunk of weird inside, it’s just that many are afraid to show it… we should have Weirdness Liberation Day
I think long lasting happiness and contentment come from knowing yourself and not caring what other people think of your random oddities… so stay in touch with your inner weirdness, keep displaying your outer weirdness, and enjoy bopping along to the toilet paper song in your head!
(you’ve now met me in person more than once, so you KNOW that I’m weird too… though I prefer ‘strange’, has a nice ring to it)

Oh, I firmly believe everyone is a little weird. Everyone has something that people think is odd. Otherwise they wouldn’t be human. I guess I’m just lucky to have someone that is either just as weird as I am, or has a high tolerance. HA!!

Yes! I love this message. Being unique is the only way to live life. I think if I lived in a hot climate I’d try to switch to cold showers, I’ve heard good things, but a hot shower in winter is the the best.

Cold showers are something that takes getting used to. And while I’ll take cold ones, sometimes I like to take a hot one every so often, it’s just so warm and comforting. I will say, the summer is pretty easy when it’s hot and sticky, a cold shower is really nice. But the true grit comes after riding your bike in the rain in 40 degree weather and all you want to do is get warm. Try taking a cold shower after that. Oh God, It’s awful!

Try it… Let me know how it goes. Word to the wise… afterwards give yourself a little while before you say hi to My Sons Mother ;)….

Hey, its a free country so normal is always optional. But do you ever worry about the social price of nonconforming at work? I don’t know your job, but I would have had difficulty having the success and financial rewards I obtained if I had showed up everyday in jeans and a Tee shirt. But that might be the norm for your workplace or you might not care about advancing. My generation was more of the “dress for success” mindset.

I guess that’s the true beauty of working in tech. When the most respected folks in the industry are known for wearing hoodies to board meetings, you don’t really have much to worry about.

It helps to be in a relaxed industry, in a relaxed city. I know they say dress for the job you want, but what if I want to be a life guard?

That’s cool, I would have preferred that myself! Now in early retirement if I’m not side gigging in a suit I’m severely casual as well!

Yeah, it makes it nice. I have a suit. But I use it sparingly. It’s basically for weddings and funerals. Hell at this point I might wear a collared shirt for an interview and that’s about it. It’s kind of crazy the relaxed nature of the industry.

Bahahaha! Thanks for letting us peek behind the kimono lol. I think that’s something a lot of FIRE bloggers have in common – most of us were/are outrageous dorks. You have to be a little bonkers to go against the grain in so many ways.

It’s not until I interact with people in public or at work that I realize how freakish all of this FIRE business is. I’m happy to be the odd one out. 😉

Wait!?!?! You actually converse with people from the outside world? You are braver than I!! HAHA.

Yes, we are all raging nerds. It’s kind of refreshing and I think that’s part of why the community is so much fun. You are so right. Once you start in down this rabbit hole, you start thinking that this is the standard way everyone thinks. It’s kind of shocking to realize otherwise.

Thought you were talking about me after the first 4 words. We aren’t as weird as we think. Though, your mouse sounds like a cluster. Love the balance of jock and nerd.

Also – your lunch Tupperware – is that leftover containers from takeout? If so, that’s also how I pack my lunch. Great minds think alike.

I think we are all a little bit strange in this community. We have to be, we’re going against the grain in so many ways.

I’ll say this about the mouse. It’s really tough for about 2 weeks, then it gets pretty easy. And it actually becomes just like using it otherwise. Same with brushing your teeth. I haven’t gotten to the point where I can write left-handed yet, but I’d love to try it. Maybe that should be a goal of mine.

And yes, the Tupperware for leftovers is from take out. We actually use them quite a bit, they are perfect sized for packed lunch left overs. So, why the hell should I pay for empty ones, when I can pay for ones full of food when I need new ones???

NIce! I also mouse ambidextrously, mostly from a carpal tunnel issue. Eventhis morning someone went to use my computer and said, “Oh are you left handed?” I said, “Not really…” lol How are the buttons backward? my left hand mouse has the main button on the inside and the “right click” button is on the outside (the left). Seemed normal to me, but is yours switched or it just seems that way to Mrs. WoW?

I love the chinese takeout tupperware idea! Brilliant!! I mostly make sandwiches every day in the morning, but I love leftovers. They’re so quick to grab and go.

As far as being weird. I think if anyone is out reading in the PF forums they’re probably not mainstream thinkers. Otherwise, they’d be on Zappo’s, Amazon, etsy, or some other shopping site looking to spend money, not save it. 🙂

Yeah, I have the buttons flipped so your index finger is the finger that you use to click, just as if it was right handed. So it’s a mirror image. hence the fun!! There’s a setting in the hardware settings where you can flip the buttons, you should try it.

People certainly are weird, I guess when you look at my browsing history, it’s all PF blogs, not shopping or video game stuff. So, but I’m glad I can be weird with everyone here.

I also am right-handed with a left-handed computer set-up. When people want to “share” my desktop, I just laugh and say, “probably not”. I actually have a mouse on both sides (track ball on the left).

What’s really interesting is that you can change to a right-hand setup and not miss a beat.

Yeah, following the norm is boring and sometimes dangerous (ahem, living in debt). Thinking outside the box is what attracted me to the FI community in the first place.

    Nice post….keep on keeping on.

Thinking outside the box is definitely something that I truly value about this community. Everyone you talk to sheds some light on an issue or a problem in a new way.

I really think you should try a cold or maybe tepid shower. Get in and start soaping up… then turn the hot water down a little. Then rinse… down a little more.. then shampoo… down a little more.

Kind of like the opposite of the frog in boiling water. By the end you’ll be in a cold shower.

It’s funny, when I take a really cold one, I have to almost get hyped up for it… “Ok, here goes” Then exhale and jump in, but once you’re in it becomes easier.

Okay, I have tried two cold showers and found them somewhat exhilarating. I must admit I did start out warm and halfway switched to cold. Cold is definitely more shocking to the system and woke me up quicker. Interesting! Not sure I would do it in the middle of winter, thou (eek!).

          • Mr WoW May 27, 2018 at 11:49 am

You don’t sound convinced. It certainly is something that takes a little getting used to. And it will wake you up in the morning. The middle of winter is rough. Especially after a long cold bike ride in the rain, I can’t do it. I need a nice warm shower to warm up. So I’m not 100% on the cold ones, but I do it quite a bit.
