Fa - A Long Long Way to Run - Fitness Challenge - Part Duex

Updated 2017-12-31

After the weight-loss challenge, Mr. 1500 and I started discussing what was next.  We were both thrilled with the results from the first contest, especially me, seeing how I won the thing.  (Hey, Mr. 1500, I'm still waiting on that guest post, BTW!!)

We soon found ourselves talking about what we want to do next.  Idea after idea was tossed around:

Maybe another weight loss challenge? Or a pull up competition?... Nope.

Maybe we could just walk around and see who picks up the most trash**?  Ehh, no real training required for that.

Or, maybe push ups would work... nah, what about weight lifting and increasing the amount of weight that we could lift?

That's not really the best thing for folks of an advanced age (Thanks PoF! I understand it may be true, but to actually hear it, OUCH!)

What's going down...

People tend to talk about how the FIRE journey is a bit like a marathon.  The discipline and perseverance required to make it through the slog of working and making it to the finish line are pretty similar.

I don't know why I suggested it, but I did, and Mr. 1500 agreed.  Whether or not this is wise or stupid we will have to let you know.  But this time the competition is against ourselves and the pavement.

So...

We are going to be running a half marathon!  Wait, what?  Yup... 13.1 Miles!

For me & Mrs. Wow, we've done a couple before, but we're going to have to get in shape for it.  For Mr. 1500 this will be his first.

We aren't going to be racing each other, but we will be holding each other accountable and tracking our progress.   Which will come to culmination at the end of March.  Here's the details:

Date: March 31, 2018
Location: Portland, Or
Race: Hop Hop Half Marathon: http://hophophalf.com/

Here's the logic behind this:

  1. We were looking for a challenge and thus needed some time to prepare. CHECK

  2. We needed to make it happen near the end of March for travel reasons.  CHECK

  3. We wanted to make it a fun.  We've never been, the 1500's were there long ago.  From what I've heard Portland has some great breweries, something that both the Wow's & 1500's enjoy.  CHECK

Here's what I propose to you:

Come and join us!***

Join our army as we prepare to defeat our mortal enemies!  Self-Doubt, Pain, Discomfort, Discipline, and most importantly, the Pavement.

This will not be a race, in the truest sense of the word.  It will be about the completion of a goal, it will be you and me vs our own demons.  We will be tracking our progress toward this goal, and there will be lots of delicious lovely beer at the end of it.

If you've never done a half marathon before, you can do it!  We're all in it together.   If you can't join us in person, join us in spirit and train along, run 13.1 on March 31.

Here is the training schedule we will be following: Half Marathon Training

On this New Years Day, set a resolution for yourself.  Get yourself in shape!  Push yourself to your limits!  Get your ass to Portland!!

Motivating?

**Shameless plug for our appearance on Talking Trash with Mr. Groovy!  That's Episode 1 and here's Episode 2.**

***Rumor has it JD Roth is joining us as well!  Yes... JD Roth from GetRichSlowly & MoneyBoss.***

If I lived anywhere near there I'd join you guys. Good luck, don't forget to carbo-load on waffles!
Mr WoW 2018-01-01
Waffles and Beer!! You can always join us in spirit and run one where you are that day. It will be great!
Tonya@Budget and the Beach 2018-01-01
Going to try to swing it but no guarantees yet. I have two races (tough mudder and terrain run) to get through with hopefully no injuries!
Mr WoW 2018-01-01
Yeah, see if you can swing it. it will be great. And a good way to get in shape. Maybe not the Half, but there is a 10k and 5k as well.
Tonya@Budget and the Beach 2018-01-01
uh, what are you saying that I'm not in shape? :)
Mr WoW 2018-01-01
That's precisely what I'm saying! HAHA. You told me yourself you wouldn't be interested in running the half. So, I figured I'd offer. Also... someone just signed up for the 10k. So there will be people doing other races.
Alanna @ Work Online Sites 2018-01-01
Oh wow. Seems you guys are quite ambitious!! I'm sure you guys will do really well with the fitness challenge. Good luck!!
Mr WoW 2018-01-01
We're hoping to push ourselves and see where it goes. Come along on the training! Follow along as we move toward this goal. Thanks for the encouragement.
Mr. Need2Save 2018-01-01
Hmm... I'm going to give this some serious consideration. I'm always up for a race and this looks to be a nice flat course. Let's hope Southwest has a good sale upcoming.
Mr WoW 2018-01-01
I think it's a good flat one. And it's pretty straight as well... flat & fast might be a winner. Plus lots of beer at the end. Win WIn WIN!!

They might have a good sale. It'd be great to get to finally meet you guys. And run with you as well!

I knew that I followed the FI community partly for 'good' peer pressure, but cardio!? ugh...
So I signed up for the 10k... I can easily walk it, let's see if I can stagger/jog a healthy portion of it... I think I need one of those sticks with a beer dangling in front of me, so I can chase after it!

It will be great to see you two again and I finally get to meet Carl.

Cheers for the New Year!
Mr WoW 2018-01-01
Yeah, it will be great to see you again as well!! That's awesome. It's good for you.

This will be fun, and we'll have to get a list together so we can coordinate rooms and stuff, but we'll worry about that as we get a little closer.

Man I have done a half before and it is no joke. Glad to see you taking on the challenge. Train and kick some asphalt...
Mr WoW 2018-01-01
This will be a good challenge, and we have plenty of time to prep. It will be fun to do.

Thanks for the encouragement.
FIRECracker 2018-01-01
Wow, half marathon. You guys are hardcore! New year, new challenge and I'm sure you will kick ass at it. We'll be cheering you on!
Mr WoW 2018-01-01
It's going to be a good challenge. This will be a good challenge, and it will kick our ass into gear. Nothing like drawing a line in the sand and making it happen.
Sean @ FrugalMoneyMan 2018-01-02
Good for you for setting such ambitous goals, and I know you guys can do it! I have been a consistent runner my whole life, but I have never taken up any type of long distance challenge.

Thanks to you, I think I am going to set a new goal for 2018!

Good luck in your race!
Mr WoW 2018-01-02
Hey thanks! Maybe you can run with us in spirit! It will definitely be a good time, you know like poking yourself in the eye!!

Let us know how your new goals work out!
Mrs. Adventure Rich 2018-01-03
Sooo tempting... I'm marking my calendar in case I can swing this! I'm training for my first marathon this year so we shall see...
Mr WoW 2018-01-03
You should, which full are you running? And when it is? This might fit right into your training!! Plus who doesn't like a weekend away every now and again?
Mr. SSC 2018-01-04
Dude, not looking good to make the trip out there for it. Maybe I'll run an unofficial half for solidarity. :) I ahve the Alamo half the first weekend in March and even though I ahve my training schedule on the fridge, I slacked off on training the last 3 weeks of December. Yesterday I realized, "Sh!t, I've got 59 days left until the race! Time for running, lots of running." Fortunately I've got a good base to build from, so I'm confident I can do it. I just need to work on adding distance as I usually run 3.5 to 5 miles at a go. Good luck!
Mr WoW 2018-01-04
No worries... good luck on you run. You'll be training right along side us.

Who knows maybe if there's a decent group this could be come a recurring thing?

I'm pretty surprised how many folks are runners in this group.
Jacq 2018-01-07
I'm up for trying the training plan, but walking first. I'm not a runner. When I was doing a 5 mile loop consistently I did start trying to jog in there. I will probably work the training days around to put a rest on the nights I already have things booked. We shall see how this goes. I mean if someone as 'of advanced age' like Carl can do it, surely I can too.
I'll be cheering you guys on from here. :)
Mr WoW 2018-01-07
Sounds great. Join us in spirit this should be a good time and a great way for all of us to get in shape for the new year!
Jacq 2018-01-07
And 21.1 isn't that far from 26.2....how great will I feel if I can say I've walked the distance of a marathon.
Cody 2018-02-12
Guys, just came across your stuff today and love it. I am an avid runner (2:50 marathoner, 1:18 half marathon). I'd love to run with yall if you would like or help you out in any way. Let me know! I'd love to tell you the story of how my gf and I met through FI forums and I moved all the way across the country.
Mr WoW 2018-02-12
2:50 Marathons?!?!?! WTF??? Ok speed racer. We're lucky if we are done with a half long enough to catch our breath at that point. Like anything though, we're not comparing we're just happy to be on our path.

If you're interested in running with us, just hit me up and let me know. We're gonna have the 1500's and jdRoth running with us, and a few other folks that are joining us. There will be a SLOW running group, and plenty of beer. Emphasis on the Beer.
PlanetOT 2018-03-03
I'm glad I found you guys! I heard you guys on BP money podcast, and was happy that another OT is on the FI journey. My gf and I just signed up for the race! Hopefully, we have a chance to say hello :)
Mrs WoW 2018-03-04
Shout out to a fellow OT!I haven't found too many OTs on this journey so its great to connect with one who's on the same path. So excited that you guys signed up for the race too. Shoot me an email and I'll keep you posted on the plans for the trip.
PlanetOT 2018-03-06
Thanks for the shout out! I eamiled you to follow up ?
